The Winner of My Ideal House

Sydney architect Madeleine Blanchfield, edged out five other designs to win Mirvac & Australian House & Garden’s My Ideal House competition. Her three-bedroom modular design is brilliantly planned, kind to the environment and affordable, neatly meeting a family’s needs for privacy in a floor plan of 228 square metres, while leaving plenty of space to enjoy the indoor-outdoor lifestyle Australians love. 

It is with great excitement and pride that Mirvac and Australian House & Garden present the My Ideal House competition winner, a home designed to answer the pressing call for a better, future-thinking housing model. 

“All the finalists' entries were compelling and of an extremely high calibre. They were chosen from more than 80 entries, because they presented truly innovative ideas for improving how families live.” says Diana Sarcasmo, Mirvac Director of Design, Sales & Marketing." 

My Ideal House judging panel member and senior lecturer and director of postgraduate research at UNSW Built Environment faculty, Dr Judith O’Callaghan, agrees:  
 
“There’s clearly great interest in the potential of project homes to meet our contemporary needs. In Madeleine’s design I see a similarity to works by the pioneers of architect-designed project housing in the 1960’s and ‘70s. They were stimulated, not stifled, by the challenge of designing repetitive housing. Her scheme shows that level of creative response; it’s a sophisticated, flexible design.” 

The next stage of the competition will involve Mirvac building Madeleine’s design for the Ideal House. The house will be built at CREST by Mirvac, a masterplanned community at Gledswood Hills in Sydney’s south-west. 

Crest at Gledswood Hills will be another exemplary neighbourhood by Mirvac. Gledswood Hills is a recently created suburb approximately 65 kilometres from Sydney’s CBD in the south-west growth corridor. The area, which lies in the Camden LGA, has been flagged as a priority growth area by the NSW department of planning & environment. 

Mirvac has designed Crest so that around half of the estate will be open, recreational space, with an immense park – almost 6,000 square metres – at its heart. The Ideal House will take advantage of the beauty and location of Crest.
